FTB just released their launcher and modpack: www.feed-the-beast.com/This is for 1.4 and has all the updated mods. The launcher seems to be very buggy and it's missing RedPower (until it's updated for 1.4) but I can see this replacing Tekkit as the modpack everyone uses since Tekkit doesn't seem to be updating. Thoughts?

I don't like the way Tekkit handles anything, their egos or pretty much anything about them. But they produce a well polished product. (The launcher, client and server. The mods themselves could use more work).
FTB looks very ameture. Right now at least, could get better.
I guess only time will tell. It seems the modded SMP community is about to be split up even more.
EDIT: wait is EE in it? I'll completely love FTB it if it is not ;D

They're calling the FTB launcher beta but I consider it alpha. Once they polish it up it will be good.
They're including EE 3 when it's ready.

Honestly I'm surprised there aren't more of these types of things. Anyone can make a custom client and server (I did before I found tekkit). All they are doing is wrapping it up in a pleasant GUI and launcher/installer so you don't have to edit your own files...

Unfortunately the MC modding community is, for some reason, not fully open source and anti-modpack. Most mod licenses include a clause that prohibits unauthorized distribution, including modpacks. This is why Forestry was removed from Technic Pack, they didn't have permission.
Some servers distribute their own custom modpack but technically it's a violation of most mod licenses. When done at small scale for a specific server it flies under the radar.

Right, so.. I say we get back on topic with this. I'd love to give it a go some how. Perhaps a pilot run, or something for a month?

It didn't gain much momentum. There are more issues than rewards with these non-forgebukkit modpacks (FTB and tekkit lite) from an administrative standpoint. They are throw away fun, play the world a bit and it breaks with the next update or exploit. I would like to be able to have these things up for some quick fun. These, challenge maps or adventure maps. This is a nice goal to work forward too, once the community of LW gets larger. Help the community grow a bit and I'll see what I can do

Instead of something like FTB, could we consider something like a Race for the Wool map we could put it on the test server occasionally for a server competition?
I'll make another thread for it soon, - Vralka

As Gn mentioned, running FTB is hard because it runs the vanilla server and the available plugins are pretty limited. I was going to take a look into porting some Bukkit plugins but I've decided to scale back on my gaming and focus more on my business.
For now FTB only works well as an anarchy or whitelisted server and there aren't any economy plugins.

Ive been playing on FTB the last week, and hve really enjoyed it. Found few bugs and have enjoyed the new items which werent on tekkie. Would defo love to see it implemented as its a really fun new thing which is different to tekkit - so everyones basically starting from scratch
